There is a lot of talk among leaders of public services about how you get good services to become great ones. It's a concept borrowed from an American business guru, but it's revealing that it is being applied at all. Not so long ago, the preoccupation would have been getting services up from poor to adequate.
Our public services have come a long way, and there is much to celebrate. The Guardian Public Services Awards, now in their fifth year, have quickly become established as the leading celebration of excellence among organisations commissioning or providing services, whether they themselves sit in the public, private or voluntary sector. Winners tell us how doing so boosts morale, profile and even recruitment. But the awards, run in partnership with Hays Specialist Recruitment, are also a powerful means of spreading excellence - helping more services make that jump from good to great.
The various categories of the awards offer opportunities for most organisations to enter. This year we have introduced a new category for people management, under our innovation and progress umbrella. There is also a special award for citizenship and volunteering, open to private sector organisations that may not be engaged in public services as part of their core work, and an award for public servant of the year. While all the other awards are for teams, we recognise that sometimes it is the contribution of an individual that makes that critical difference. | | | Welcome from our editors
